There is a lot of debate about the theory of suspension arms being a “fusible link” that should give out or break to save other components. The difficulty with this application has many factors, the most important of which is, how the load is being applied. Most all suspension arms are designed to be under tension or compression, thusly any impact that changes the direction of the load is not how it’s designed to be used. This goes for all components attached to the arms. Sub frames and spindles are designed for specific loads under normal operating conditions. Most OEM parts are not designed to “withstand” a collision in a competition or aggressive environment that has highly modified components such as tire size, wheel weight, ride height, horsepower, steering angle, or adding reinforcements to spindles or sub frames that changes their strength, much less hitting another car or barrier after modifications. It is extremely hard to analyze all the possible modifications and types of collisions that could cause a failure and to what part, and then design a product for all environments and situations in hopes of saving one specific part or another. Let’s make a statement “Let’s build a highly modified car that’s way outside manufacturer specs, use it harshly in a manner it was never intended for, and then, when I hit something it wasn’t designed to hit in a manner it was never designed to survive, of the multitude of components involved, I only want one single part to give out intentionally to save the others, even though I’m not sure which part will need to be sacrificed or when that time will come.” Let’s ask a question, what if your wheel was designed to absorb the impact and break as it is the first point of contact, thusly saving every part behind it. The entire suspension would be safe, all you have to do is unbolt the broken wheel and bolt on a spare, which you probably have anyway. Wouldn’t that be smarter than trying to pinpoint a single control arm you want absorb under a specific unwanted and unknown impact?

Quite simply, we build robust parts to withstand abuse, there’s always a way to break everything, and of course, blame someone else for the subsequent carnage.
